I've read a post about a new x server (xorg) from @Sandra@idiomdrottning.org written entirely in Zig. It's called Phoenix and is still in early development, but it's a ray of hope on the horizon. It's not a fork but a complete rewrite in Zig, and it seems to make progress fast.

Up until now I still use the sooner or later deprecated xorg server for my AwesomeWM setup, which I love so much. And I believe I won't find something similar with wayland. I hope the development of Phoenix will be successful and ready to use before xorg becomes completely deprecated, so I can continue using AwesomeWM.

Wayland simply is not my cup of tea. And it seems to have a lot of design problems (not every wayland app is compatible with every compositor for example and seems to be overly complex). So I resisted to deal with wayland as a whole except one time to try it out with hyprland, which wasn't very successful.

I don't want to completely relearn the underlying nuts and bolts. I prefer a new and modernized version of the xserver, which will be fully compatible with my AwesomeWM setup. I think I'll switch to Phoenix, the day it can completely run my beloved AwesomeWM. And I'll keep a close eye on Phoenix' development and wish the developers all the best!

So: 👍 for Phoenix. May it be a success!
